An academic drawing of a standing bearded male nude, surrounded by studies of hands and feet. Red chalk lends warmth and presence to the central figure, while black pencil accents selected details and defines the accompanying studies.

This sheet may be understood as an early twentieth-century reinterpretation of the tradition of drawing in naturally coloured chalks, cultivated since the Renaissance and notably exemplified by the trois crayons technique. Here, the palette is reduced to red and black, without apparent white heightening: the tone of the paper contributes directly to the light and modelling of the body.

The drawing is striking for its unflinching realism. The individual character of the face, the muscles, folds of skin and weight of the body are observed without idealisation. This directness gives the model a vividly human presence.

Alongside the discipline of anatomical study is a distinctive decorative sensibility. Arranged around the nude, the studies of hands and feet establish an almost ornamental rhythm. Their sinuous contours and angular lines recall aspects of Jugendstil: fragments of the body become graphic motifs while retaining their descriptive precision.
